The History of Tonkatsu Yutaka

More Than 80 Years of Tradition in Asakusa

Founded in 1945, shortly after the end of World War II, Tonkatsu Yutaka began its journey in Asakusa during one of the most difficult periods in Japan’s history. Much of the area had been devastated by the war, and obtaining quality ingredients was far from easy.

Despite these challenges, the founders, Isamu and Tai, shared a simple but powerful belief:

"We wanted our guests to enjoy tonkatsu that was truly delicious—prepared with care, made from quality ingredients, and never relying on gimmicks or shortcuts."

At a time when even basic ingredients were difficult to obtain, they relied on coke to maintain the fire and continued preparing tonkatsu for their customers.

Their first restaurant was modest. During winter, snow sometimes drifted through gaps beneath the eaves. It is said that a master carpenter who visited the restaurant smiled and remarked:

"This place has real charm. It even snows inside the restaurant."

Even in those humble beginnings, Yutaka offered warmth, hospitality, and sincerity.

The founders believed that a great restaurant should provide more than good food. The dishes, the tableware, the atmosphere, and the hospitality should all work together to create a memorable experience.

To achieve this vision, they spent years studying restaurants and refining their recipes. The foundation of Yutaka’s tonkatsu was established more than 80 years ago and continues to guide us today.

Our signature tonkatsu is prepared using carefully selected branded pork, including Yamato Pork, a premium pork highly regarded both in Japan and internationally for its tenderness and rich flavor.

To highlight the natural taste of the pork, we use specially prepared breadcrumbs and high-quality cottonseed oil, creating the light and crispy texture that has become a hallmark of Yutaka.

Many guests enjoy our tonkatsu with traditional Japanese Worcestershire sauce, while others prefer moshio, a seaweed-infused salt that enhances the natural sweetness and flavor of the pork.

The restaurant itself reflects the beauty of traditional Japanese craftsmanship. At its center stands a large knot-free Japanese cypress pillar, while handcrafted woven ceilings showcase the skill of artisans from generations past. On the second floor, private sukiya-style rooms provide a quiet and elegant setting.

Every detail of the restaurant reflects the passion of its founders and the dedication of Japanese craftsmen.

Today, more than 80 years after opening, Tonkatsu Yutaka continues to welcome local residents and travelers from around the world with the same spirit of hospitality.

In a peaceful back street of Asakusa, Tokyo, we proudly continue a tradition of authentic Japanese cuisine, warm hospitality, and timeless Japanese charm.
